“Herd immunity” is a technical term used in vaccination programmes. It is used to describe the situation where 80% or more of a population is vaccinated and thus immune to a specific pathogen. Over the course of the past year or so this term is popping up as a political strategy to
explain legitimise the rampant spread of COVID-19.
Political decision makers use the expression “herd immunity” to indicate “immunising” more the 80% of the population without a vaccine by exposing them to live virus. What could possibly go wrong? Why would anybody doubt the wisdom of letting a more than average contagious and deadly disease run unimpeded through their constituency? Perhaps the rationale is that unhappy and sick people are more profitable then happy and lively ones? And who could blame such civilised economic reasoning?
Why would you educate your herd about what viruses are and do? What they need to reproduce? How they spread from person to person? Why would you educate people about the properties and behaviour of viruses and other invisible co-inhabitants of our world? Why would you explain about how our in-sane behaviour is stirring up viruses, deadly to people, from their comfort zones and last refuges in the wilderness.
